Dear Holden,
In your last letter, you seemed very irritated about the number of "phony" people at Pencey Prep, who acted like something or someone they really weren't. Well, there is good news for you about the world in 2010. Because of increased tolerance in our modern society, there are less "fakes" as there is less pressure for people to conform to a certain ideal. You would love this.
In the almost 70 years that have passed, much has changed in American society. While the definition of what was normal and acceptable was found in a very narrow range in the 1940s, society has now become less restrictive and more accepting of all different types of lifestyles. We embrace individuality and encourage creativity. For example, now there are more professions that truly require unique brands of humor. You could use your personal talent of spinning stories in a career such as a playwright, screenwriter, or author for a variety of media outlets. Subject matter for entertainment is much more varied than it was in the 1940s. It's possible to do more risqué, dark, or fantastic types of work. With your love of fanciful tales, and your narrative skills, you would be able to gain financial and social success in a media-based occupation.
Because of the relaxed personal requirements in 2010, people are less likely to try to present a persona that is not authentic. That means there are less "phonies" today. Stradlater, Ackley, and company, all who you've called "phonies", would not be forced to fit stereotypical social standards. In today's world, we are more diverse, and we are learning to be proud of this trait. Furthermore, people who would have been considered outcasts in the '40s are now celebrated.
Most importantly for you, people are more educated about psychological issues. Not only have there been breakthroughs in the field of medicine, but there are many new diagnostic and treatment techniques for mental health challenges. I am certain that you could find relief by having access to depression medication, especially after the traumatic experiences that you've been through, including your younger brother dying at an early age and a roommate of yours committing suicide. In today's world, these event would trigger alarms, as to potentially having a detrimental effect on your well-being, and you would be encouraged to see a psychologist to ensure the stability of your mental health. Additionally, teachers, parents and counselors are better trained to identify and address ADHD and other learning disabilities that might hinder a child's success in school. I believe you could benefit from this type of outreach, and this would have helped you find more satisfaction in your formal education.
In 2010, it is likely that you would be more receptive to the world around you with the appropriate guidance from mental health professionals. Also, you would find society to be less suffocating, with fewer rules and regulations for personal conduct. Lastly, your talent would be valuable in our society. Put all 3 things together, and I think that you would find a reasonable level of happiness and peace in my world.
Write back soon.
Love,
Kira
