CD Soundtrack & Explanation

The future Catcher in the Rye movie soundtrack-

1. Bad Day- Daniel Powter

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to gray
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee you go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And I don't need no carryin' on

Because you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Will you need a blue sky holiday?
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

(Oooh.. a holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

(yeah...)

So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

2. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams- Green Day

I walk a lonely road,
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
and I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone

Read between the lines
What's messed up and everything's alright
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk a...

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone...

3. Somebody to Love - Justin Bieber

For you i’d write a symphony!
I’d tell the violin
It’s time to sink a swim
March and play for ya!

For you i’d be
Runnin' a thousand miles
Just get you where you are
Step to the beat of my heart.

I don’t need a whole lot
But for you I need I
I’d rather give you the world
Or we can share mine!
I know that I won’t be the first one given you all this attention

But Baby listen,
I just need somebody to love
I don’t need to much
Just need Somebody to love.
(just need sombody to love)

I don’t need nothing else,
I promise girl I swear.
I just need somebody to love.

(I need somebody I-I need somebody
I need somebody I-I need somebody)

Everyday I bring the sun around,
Slip away the clouds.
Smile for me (Smile for me)

I would take,
Every second,
Every single time spend it like my last dime.
Step to the beat of my heart.

I don’t need a whole lot
But for you I admit I
I’d rather give you the world
Or we can share mine!

I know I won’t be the first one,
Given you all this attention.
Baby listen!

I just need somebody to love
I don’t need to much
Just need Somebody to love.
(just need sombody to love)

I don’t need nothing else,
I promise girl I swear.
I just need somebody to love.

4. Why Don't You & I - Santana

Since the moment I spotted you
Like walking 'round with little wings on my shoes
My stomach's filled with the butterflies
And it's alright
Bouncing round from cloud to cloud
I got the feelin' like I'm never gonna come down
If I said I didn't like it then you know I'd lied

Every time I try to talk to you
I get tongue-tied
Turns out, everything I say to you
Comes out wrong and never comes out right

So I'll say why don't you and I get together an' take on the world, be together forever
Heads we will and tails we'll try again
So I say why don't you and I hold each other, fly to the moon
and straight on to heaven
Cause without you they're never gonna let me in

When's this fever gonna break ?
I think I've handled more than any man can take
I'm like a love-sick puppy chasing you around
And it's alright
Bouncin' round from cloud to cloud
I got the feeling like I'm never gonna come down
If I said I didn't like it then you know I'd lied

Every time I try to talk to you
Get tongue-tied
Turns out, everything I say to you
Comes out wrong and never comes out right

So I'll say why don't you and I get together an' take on the world
and be together forever
Heads we will and tails we'll try again
So I say why don't you and I get together, fly to the moon
and straight on to heaven
Cause without you they're never gonna let me in

Slowly I begin to realize this is never gonna end
But about the same time you walk by
And I say oh here we go again, oh

Every time I try to talk to you
I get tongue-tied
Turns out, everything I say to you
Comes out wrong and never comes out right

So I'll say why don't you and I get together an' take on the world
and be together forever
Heads we will and tails we'll try again
So I say why don't you and I hold each other, fly to the moon
and straight on to heaven
Cause without you they're never gonna let me in

So I'll say why don't you and I get together take and on the world
and be together forever
Heads we will and tails we'll try again
So I say why don't you and I hold each other, fly to the moon
and straight on to heaven
Cause without you they're never gonna let me in

So I`ll say why don't you and I get together and take on the world
and be together forever
Heads we will and tails we'll try again

5. My Wish- Rascal Flatts

I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow
And each road leads you where you want to go
And if you're faced with the choice and you have to choose
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you

And if one door opens to another door closed
I hope you keep on walkin' ?til you find the window
If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile
But more than anything, more than anything

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold

And while you're out there gettin' where you're gettin' to
I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too
Yeah, this is my wish

I hope you never look back but you never forget
All the ones who love you and the place you left
I hope you always forgive and you never regret
And you help somebody every chance you get

Oh, you'd find God's grace in every mistake
And always give more than you take
But more than anything, yeah more than anything

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold

And while you're out there gettin' where you're gettin' to
I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too
Yeah, this is my wish, yeah yeah

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold

And while you're out there gettin' where you're gettin' to
I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too
Yeah, this is my wish
(My wish for you)

This is my wish
(My wish for you)
I hope you know somebody loves you
(My wish for you)
May all your dreams stay big
(My wish for you)

Why did you pick the songs you picked? Why would they serve as a good soundtrack for the movie?

1. The song "Bad Day" could describe the initial moment when Holden decides to leave his school, Pencey Prep, a couple of days early. "When I was all set to go, I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down the goddam corridor...then yelled at the top of my goddam voice 'Sleep tight, ya morons!'" Holden remembers (52). This anger, frustration, and underlying sadness is picked up in the song's lyrics "Where is the moment we needed the most/ You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost/ They tell me your blue skies fade to gray/ They tell me your passion's gone away/ And I don't need no carryin' on". The "moment needed the most" in the song could also refer to the "goodbye" that Holden had proclaimed that he needed to feel before leaving a place. Overall, this song would serve as a good soundtrack for the movie because of the constant depression that Holden holds within himself.

2. The song "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", is a reminder of Holden during the scene at the beginning of Chapter 13, where he walks 41 blocks, alone, back to his hotel. In this song, the singer expresses his level of isolation, and what he calls "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams". The lyrics "I walk this empty street/ On the Boulevard of broken dreams/ Where the city sleeps/ And I'm the only one and I walk alone" best represent the scene of lone Holden trudging throughout the streets of New York. Holden rationalizes his actions by explaining how he does not want to be social. "I didn't do it because I felt like walking. It was more because I didn't feel like getting in and out of another taxicab," narrates Holden (88). The failure described in the song is similar to that of Holden's, because Holden wouldn't have been on the streets of New York if he hadn't flunked out of the prestigious prep school he had attended. The scene in Chapter 12, where Holden dances with three different girls in a bar before they desert him, also relates to the song lyrics "Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me/ 'Til then I walk alone". In both, social interaction and connection are wanted, but never found.

3. This simple song represents the plot very well, because the singer is expressing his want of romance and need of a girlfriend, especially through the lyrics that beg "I just need somebody to love/ I don't need too much/ Just somebody to love". This relates to Holden Caulfield because he is practically desperate to have a loving companion, but the reader can see that Holden is at a disadvantage because he is somewhat socially inept. Holden's frenzied and thoughtless endeavor with a prostitute, in Chapter 13, clearly shows this. As Holden accepts the man's offer for a prostitute, he explains his decision by saying, "It was against my principles and all, but I was feeling so depressed I didn't even think" (91). The song's despairing lyrics "Find me somebody to love!" fits this scene perfectly.

4. The upbeat song "Why Don't You & I" describes Holden's date with Sally Hayes. In this chapter, 17, Holden acts very erratically. When he first sees Sally, he suddenly "feels like marrying [her], and feels like [he] is in love" (124). Next, Holden begins to fall apart, fitfully complaining about school and life, and then fantasizes about running away with Sally. "How would you like to get the hell out of here?...What we could do is, tomorrow morning we could drive up to Massachusetts and Vermont, and all around there...I could go down and get this guy's car. No kidding. We'll stay in these cabin camps and stuff like that until dough runs out...I could get a job somewhere...and we could get married our something. Honest to God, we could have a terrific time! Will you do it with me?" Holden pleads (132). This emotion of suddenly wanting to leave the rest of the world behind, breaking free from society, to be with someone special is expressed in the song "Why Don't You & I". The upbeat lyrics "I'll say why don't you and I get together/ Take on the world and be together forever/ Heads we will, tails we'll try again/ So I say why don't you and I hold each other/ Fly to the moon and straight on to heaven" express how the limitless possibilities are filling Holden's head. After he proclaims his newfound dream, however, Sally points out his unrealistic plan. Holden's childish and cowardish idea and handling of the following situation also shows the reader how Holden is probably not as mature as he portrays himself to be.

5. "My Wish" is a reflective promise of everlasting care, and relates to Catcher in the Rye as Holden loves and cares about his younger sister Phoebe so much. In the text, Holden talks about her frequently. "You never saw a little kid so pretty and smart in your whole life," Holden affectionately describes her (67). Holden's protective nature is truly revealed in the last few chapters of the book. At first, he sees that someone has written "Fuck you" in the stairwell of Phoebe's elementary school, and becomes very angry. He says, "It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other little kids would see it, and they'd wonder what the hell it meant... I kept wanting to kill whoever'd written it" (201). Here, Holden wants to help Phoebe remain innocent and pure. Later, Holden refuses to let her come with him on his journey, and tries to make her go back to school. Phoebe, of course, refuses to go back to school, and so instead Holden convinces her to go to the zoo with him. Put out that Holden will not let her accompany him, Phoebe ignores her brother by walking on the other side of the street. "The only thing that bothered me was when a double-decker bus came along because then I couldn't see across the street and I couldn't see where the hell she was," Holden narrates anxiously (209). The lyrics "My wish for you/Is that this life becomes all that you want it to/ Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small/ You never need to carry more than you can hold" represent the things that Holden feels as an older brother to Phoebe. This tells the reader that Holden feels obligated in a way to protect Phoebe from the evil in the world so that she does not become a "phony", the name he calls the members of the adult world, which is a way of distancing himself from the eventual need to grow up and mature.
